SUMMARY:Photonics for Europe
DESCRIPTION:The new European research and innovation framework programme Horizon Europe is open for business\, and UK organisations are eligible to take part. Under Horizon Europe\, photonics continues to be recognised as a key enabling technology and retains a dedicated budget. \nThis event will provide an overview of the role of photonics in Horizon Europe\, including the role of Photonics21 and PhotonHub. Opportunities for photonics businesses and researchers to take part in Horizon Europe will be highlighted\, both in the core photonics area and across the wider programme. \nThis is a unique opportunity for business and researchers from the UK and Europe to find out more about the new photonics programme and how to get involved. A pitching opportunity will also be provided alongside networking sessions.

SUMMARY:Towards a European Strategy on Quantum Photonics Integrated Circuits- Online Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Photonic Integration in general and Quantum Photonic Integrated Circuits (QPICs) in particular are considered as an enabler for quantum technology\, and conversely quantum technology is regarded as a major emerging market for photonic integration. \nIn order to profit from the European Quantum Flagship and the Photonics21 ETP that are actively supporting these fields in Europe\, joint efforts are needed to gain technological leadership and stimulate job creation. \nIn this context\, a joint Focus Group from both initiatives has been formed\, with the general goals of making QPICs a European priority and setting up a European QPIC infrastructure on the longer term. A position paper from this Focus Group that elaborates the required efforts in more detail is currently under preparation. This position paper will be used to build the basis for future cooperation of projects from both areas\, better access to infrastructure and joint funding activities of both initiatives. \nThe Focus Group is organizing a joint online workshop “Towards a European Strategy on Quantum Photonics Integrated Circuits”\, which aims on the one hand at presenting and discussing the preliminary version of the position paper and further elaborating the general goals of the joint efforts\, and\, on the other hand\, at bringing together and showcasing research projects working on QPICs stemming from different funding initiatives.

SUMMARY:Scaling Up and Commercialising Metamaterials webinar
DESCRIPTION:Once an aspect of metamaterials technology has been identified with the potential in a particular application\, there is a need to look to scale up the production to develop demonstrators and prototypes. This activity is often associated with a start-up or SME since the technology is brought in from research. The needs of these small enterprises in progressing\, from this first step to commercialisation\, can include a variety of services offered from academia to investors. Very often investors will only be interested in further steps to commercialise or upscale. \nThis KTN webinar will bring together a variety of experts who can offer organisations the support they need to successfully scale up and commercialise. This includes modelling services from academia; advanced manufacturing scale up from catapults and academia; innovation funding and investor access from Government-funded organisations; early-stage design expertise to ensure capture of best product and application\, to name just a few

SUMMARY:Hot Electron Applications and Technology
DESCRIPTION:New research on “Reactive Plasmonics”\, led by King’s College London and Imperial College London\, is developing technologies to harness the large intrinsic thermal energy of light. Remarkably\, “hot electrons” excited by light in metals achieve temperatures of many 1000°C\, while the host metal remains near ambient conditions. This activates a range of opto-electronic and photo-chemical processes with applications in photodetection\, sensing\, catalysis and localized thermal treatments. \nTake part in tailored discussion sessions on three scientific themes and ask researchers about how they would apply their research in: \nCatalysis – photochemistry; Sabatier process; photocatalysts \nThe impact of hot-electrons derived from metals leads to greener chemistry with massive energy savings and with the possibility to activate novel reaction pathways on the horizon. (14:15-15:00) \nSensing – bandgap free photodetectors; gas sensors \nHot electrons within opto-electronic devices point to new band-gap-free methods of photodetection; breaking the principle that specific materials must be tailored to detect certain colours of light. (15:00-15:45) \nNanoscale Heat – thermometry; photo-acoustics; refractory materials \nOur ability to shape metals with nanoscale features means that we can localise heat on similar dimensions. This enables technology to focus and deliver heat with exquisite temporal and spatial precision. (16:00-16:45) \n  \nJoin Industry and Academic speakers from the Reactive Plasmonics team at our Online Industry Open Day on 25 November to discuss how this research affects your industry

SUMMARY:Women in Enabling Technologies
DESCRIPTION:Are you a woman working in enabling technologies such as electronics\, sensors\, photonics\, RF and microwave or acoustics? Join our workshop and explore why we are not seeing more women in these sectors. \nEnabling technology is helping to change our world\, but how will the sector meet the needs of a diverse population if it is being shaped by a small section of society? \nGender imbalance in the technology industry is a major issue\, with only 5% of leadership positions held by women\, and women less likely to consider a technology career than men. (Pwc\, Women in Tech Report). \nDrawing on participants’ experience and the barriers that they have faced\, and asking “What could be the short and long-term solutions?”\, we aim to work together to help tackle the issues raised\, and help develop KTN’s support for Women in Enabling Technologies. \nIn this context and in line with our national diversity and inclusion guidelines\, this networking workshop aims to support and promote the presence of women in enabling technologies and discuss barriers and solutions towards a more gender-balanced landscape.

SUMMARY:SPIE Space\, Satellites and Sustainability (S3)
DESCRIPTION:We face a climate crisis\, with associated widespread losses of natural ecosystems and biodiversity. In 2015 in Paris\, global leaders agreed on 17 sustainable development goals and 169 associated targets to be met by 2030. Satellites provide a unique ability to support sustainable development with scaled analyses. \nOrganised by the University of Edinburgh and SPIE\, this inter-disciplinary meeting will highlight newly-operational and forthcoming satellite systems providing new sensors supporting sustainability. Advances in the processing of big satellite data will be presented alongside novel analytics including those producing actionable sustainability intelligence.
