UK Semiconductor Strategy Launched: key infrastructure needs survey open

The Photonics Leadership Group welcomes the publication of the Government’s National semiconductor strategy. UK strength in photonics and compound semiconductors and the importance of integrated photonics are all emphasised in the strategy.

The strategy secures initial funding for the UK Semiconductor Infrastructure Initiative. Inputs are currently sort into a major user group survey to gather evidence on the infrastructure needed by UK industry in the four key areas of semiconductor design, silicon prototyping, compound semi. foundry services and packaging including heterogenous integration. The PLG is pleased to be part of the consortia scoping these infrastructure plans and request all interested parties to submit inputs by 31 May or earlier if possible. A follow-up set of workshop in July will address the key issues identified from the initial data gather to enable a detailed proposals for government.

    Be keen to see the strategy have specific funding mechanisms that truly develop UK supply chain companies whilst it is obviously going to fund incumbent UK companies presently having niche market advantages. Please try to refrain from letting the public funded bodies simply spending their efforts on foreign machinery to deliver into these selected companies.
